Amjad Islam Amjad (Urdu: امجد اسلام امجد) (born 4 August 1944 – 10 February 2023) was an acclaimed Pakistani poet, drama writer and lyricist. He has earned fame as one of the most prolific and talented Urdu poets of the modern era. Amjad Islam Amjad has also been applauded for his scriptwriting and has won various awards for the same. Amjad was born in Amritsar, India, in 1944. His family migrated to Lahore, Pakistan in 1947 after the Partition of India. He was educated at Government College, Lahore and the Punjab University. He started writing poetry at the age of 17, under the pen name ‘Gul’. Amjad‘s first book of poetry, ‘Ek Dagh Dagh Ujala’ (A New Dawn) was published in 1967, when he was 23 years old. The collection of poems was highly acclaimed by the literary circles and it was hailed as the beginning of a new era in Urdu poetry.
